Richard Andrew Laviolette (August 22, 1982 – September 5, 2023) was a gifted Canadian singer-songwriter and musician hailing from Guelph, Ontario. Throughout his music career, he released music under various band names, showcasing his versatility and creativity.
Early Life and Education Richard Laviolette was born on August 22, 1982, in Port Colborne, Ontario. He spent his youth in Tara, Ontario, growing up in a musical family. His parents, Darrell and Marie, played a crucial role in nurturing his love for music through family sing-alongs and jamborees. Laviolette learned to play several instruments, including the mandolin and guitar, from his father. His family’s influence fostered a deep appreciation for traditional folk and country mandolin styles.
In his teenage years, Laviolette was introduced to musicians like Hayden and Elliott Smith, expanding his musical horizons. During high school, he was part of various bands and started his journey into the world of music.
Laviolette began his higher education at the University of Guelph with the intention of becoming a teacher. However, his passion for music led him to drop out and pursue music full-time.
Career Laviolette’s music career took off with his debut album under the name Mary Carl, recorded while he was still a student at the University of Guelph. Subsequently, he released albums under different band names, including Richard Laviolette and His Black Lungs, Richard Laviolette and the Oil Spills, Richard Laviolette and the Hollow Hooves, and Richard Laviolette and the Glitter Bombs.
He released several albums over the years, showcasing his musical diversity and talent. Some of his notable albums include “A Little Less Like a Rock, a Little More Like Home,” “Aging Recycling Plant,” “All of Your Raw Materials,” and “Taking the Long Way Home.” Laviolette often collaborated with fellow artists, further enriching the music scene.
Illness and Passing In 2022, Laviolette was diagnosed with Huntington’s disease, a debilitating neurological disorder. The disease progressed rapidly, prompting him to choose medical assistance in dying (MAiD). On September 5, 2023, at the age of 41, Laviolette peacefully passed away, leaving behind a legacy of soulful and inspiring music.
Even in the face of his illness, Laviolette’s dedication to music persisted. He had recorded an album titled “All Wild Things Are Shy,” which was set to be released posthumously, a testament to his enduring love for creating music.
