Shabtai Shavit: Israeli Intelligence Stalwart and Mossad Director-General
Shabtai Shavit (Hebrew: שבתי שביט; 17 July 1939 – 5 September 2023) was a distinguished Israeli intelligence officer who notably held the position of Director-General of the Mossad, Israel’s national intelligence agency, from 1989 to 1996.
Biography: Shavit commenced his career in the Israeli Navy and subsequently served in the elite Sayeret Matkal. His dedication to service and exceptional capabilities led to his appointment as the military governor of the Southern Command from 1978 to 1979. In 1964, he transitioned to the Mossad, the renowned intelligence agency, where he steadily climbed the ranks until reaching the esteemed position of director-general.
Post his tenure at the Mossad, Shavit ventured into the realm of healthcare, serving as the CEO of Maccabi Health Services Group for a span of five years. Further diversifying his contributions, from 2001 onward, he assumed the role of chairman at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel. Additionally, Shavit held significant positions in various capacities, encompassing roles such as president and CEO of EMG Israel, chairman of Athena, advisor to the Israeli National Security Council, advisor to the Knesset Committee on Foreign Affairs, and a member of the N.Y.F.D. Task Force for Future Preparedness Against Terrorism.

Notably, in May 2017, he voiced concern over international information sharing, criticizing then-President Donald Trump for potentially jeopardizing classified intelligence. His passing on 5 September 2023 at the age of 84 marked the end of an era in Israeli intelligence.
